Research & Development – Houston, TX – Full Time

Basic Function

The candidate will investigate physicochemical processes in geological environments from an atomistic level in order to advance the molecular-scale basis of carbon transformations.  The research will be conducted as part of a collaborative initiative to develop nature-inspired and/or engineered strategies for CO2 utilization and geological storage.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advance the understanding of nanoconfined fluid systems including chemical reactions, ion pairing, solution dynamics, and ion transport using unconventional experimental designs
  • Design customized experimental methods to probe the interface of complex systems composed of brine, supercritical CO2, and minerals
  • Develop methods that lead to energetically favorable pathways for synthesizing new products or accelerating CO2 mineralization
  • Design novel material systems or engineered molecular processes to utilize and/or permanently store CO2 in geological environments
  • Study geochemical reactions and fate and transport in geological systems; develop new methods to study small scale, reactive fluid transport, and the thermodynamics of equilibrium and kinetic processes in geological materials
  • Contribute to and initiate innovative projects with recognized high business impact to Aramco
  • Utilize a wide range of modern analytical techniques for the characterization of materials and systems
  • Capture intellectual property related to CO2 utilization and storage
  • Prepare high impact technical papers for peer-reviewed journals
  • Participate/contribute to professional societies and technical groups
  • Be a team player working with people who have a wide range of skill sets and disciplines
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to maintain high quality occupational health, safety, & environment (HSE) rules and regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on education & experience
  • Candidate should be comfortable in working independently or part of a project team
  • International travel maybe required to meetings at conferences and universities

Education and Experience

  • M.S. Degree in Chemistry, Physics, or related discipline. Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, or Physics highly preferred
  • Typically has sixteen (16) years of professional experience including at least five (5) years as a specialist with full responsibility for major technical work in physical chemistry
  • Expertise in the experimental study of nanoconfined fluid systems including chemical reactions, ion pairing, solution dynamics, and ion transport
  • Knowledge of complex equilibria of aqueous systems and solubility/miscibility properties of pressurized fluids
  • Understanding small scale, reactive fluid transport, and the thermodynamics of equilibrium and kinetic processes in geological materials is desirable; knowledge of CO2 mineralization processes is also desirable
  • Knowledge of mineral reaction rates in multimineral porous media; experience coupling laboratory experiments and reactive transport simulations with multiscale imaging analysis to enhance understanding of porous media samples is desirable
  • Strong knowledge of chemical analysis techniques such as NMR, FT-IR, Raman, XRD, Mass Spec, or AFM; ability to develop custom experimental setups is a plus
  • Candidate will have achieved substantial recognition in their area of expertise; ideally, the candidate will have published in significant technical journals and will have a history of active participation in technical society activities
  • Must be able to communicate and comprehend accurately, clearly and concisely in English at a level required to perform the job as outlined
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; proficient technical writing skills
